Steps 4, 5, and 6 apply only to underground electrical services.

Step 5: Dig the Trench and Install Conduit (Underground Service Only) {#step5}
Once the trench inspector has given direction on the conduit route and installation requirements, excavation can begin.
We dig the trench and install approximately 90% of the conduit. The final 10% the section that enters into SDG&E's handhole or transformer vault cannot be installed by the electrical contractor. That section is completed by SDG&E's own crew after a second trench inspection.
On larger Bonsall properties, this trench can run a significant distance across the lot. We take care to protect landscaping, irrigation lines, and existing hardscape during this phase.
Step 6: Trench Inspection and Backfill (Underground Service Only) {#step6}
Once the conduit is 90% installed, we contact the SDG&E trench inspector a second time to approve the final conduit section entering the utility handhole or transformer.
After that approval, we call SDG&E's service coordinator to schedule their crew to complete the last section of conduit. Once SDG&E finishes its portion, we backfill the trench and repair any driveway, hardscape, or landscaping that was disturbed.
A final underground inspection by the SDG&E trench inspector must be passed before the project moves forward to Step 7.
Step 7: Schedule the Disconnect/Reconnect With SDG&E {#step7}
Steps 4 through 6 were specific to underground services. Starting here, Steps 7 through 12 apply to both overhead and underground services.
The disconnect/reconnect is the date we schedule for SDG&E to cut power to your property so the old panel can be safely removed and the new one installed. This is the main installation day.
The disconnect/reconnect is scheduled through your assigned SDG&E service coordinator. Once the date is confirmed, we notify the San Diego County PDS office so a County inspector can be scheduled to come out the same day.
Step 8: SDG&E Disconnects Power at the Source {#step8}
Installation day.
Early in the morning, an SDG&E crew arrives at your Bonsall property to disconnect power at the utility source. This de-energizes the entire service, allowing us to safely remove the old panel.
Important: Approximately three days before the scheduled installation date, Dig Alert (811) should be called again to re-mark all underground utilities, gas, water, and communications in the immediate work area.
Step 9: Install the Grounding and Bonding System {#step9}
The National Electrical Code (NEC) and California Electrical Code (CEC) both require a complete, code-compliant grounding and bonding system for every new electrical panel installation.
This includes:
Two ground rods driven a minimum of 8 feet into the earth
A cold water pipe bond
A continuous, unbroken solid copper ground conductor sized per NEC tables connecting both ground rods, the cold water pipe, and the new panel

Step 11: Repair Stucco or Siding {#step11}
Replacing an electrical panel almost always requires cutting into the exterior stucco or siding of the home to remove the old panel and properly seat the new one.
Once the panel is installed and the inspection has been scheduled, the affected area is patched, waterproofed, and textured to match the surrounding exterior as closely as possible. This repair must be completed and painted before the final inspection can be passed.
