What Makes Panel Upgrades in Solana Beach Different
Solana Beach is a small coastal city with a mix of older beach cottages, mid-century homes, and newer high-end properties. That variety creates a wide range of electrical panel situations that our team encounters regularly throughout this community.
Many of the older homes along the coast in Solana Beach were built with 100 amp service and in some cases still carry original Zinsco or Federal Pacific panels. These panels are not only undersized for modern use but in many cases present real safety risks that homeowners are not aware of until a licensed electrician opens the box and takes a look.
On the other end, newer and recently remodeled properties in Solana Beach often have higher electrical demands driven by solar systems, EV chargers, smart home technology, and large appliances. Even a home with a relatively new 200 amp panel can run out of capacity quickly when all of these loads are added together.
Landers Electric manages the full panel upgrade process in Solana Beach from the SDG&E service change request to the final City of Solana Beach inspection. We handle all the paperwork and coordination so nothing falls through the cracks.
When hiring an electrical contractor in Solana Beach, always check their California contractor license and confirm they carry general liability insurance. Landers Electric holds CSLB License #1089091 and is fully insured on every job.
Is Your Solana Beach Home Ready for an EV Charger?
Solana Beach is one of San Diego County's most environmentally conscious communities, and electric vehicle ownership here reflects that. Many homeowners in Solana Beach are either already driving an EV or planning to make the switch, and a home Level 2 charger is the most practical and cost-effective way to keep the vehicle charged overnight.
The challenge is that a Level 2 EV charger requires a dedicated 40 to 60 amp circuit, and many Solana Beach homes, particularly older coastal properties, do not have that capacity available in their existing panel. Adding a charger to an undersized or already-full panel creates a real risk of overloading the system.
We always recommend a hardwired EV charger rather than a plug-in model. A hardwired installation is more reliable, safer over the long term, and satisfies all City of Solana Beach permit requirements in most standard installations.
Before you purchase your charger or book an installation date, call us first. 📞 Call Landers Electric today at (760) 690-7517 or Text Us Anytime. We can evaluate your panel and let you know exactly what is needed, often in a single phone call.

How Do You Know Your Solana Beach Home Needs a Panel Upgrade?
These are the most common situations that lead Solana Beach homeowners to reach out to us:
Breakers trip on a regular basis during everyday use
A burning smell or unusual warmth is coming from the area near the electrical panel
Rust, corrosion, or physical damage is visible inside the panel box
The home still has a Zinsco or Federal Pacific panel that needs to be replaced for safety
A new appliance, EV charger, heat pump, or air conditioning system requires more capacity than the current panel can provide
A home renovation, room addition, or accessory dwelling unit is being planned and the existing panel cannot support the increased electrical load
If any of these situations apply to your Solana Beach property, do not wait for the problem to get worse. Have a licensed electrician evaluate your panel and give you a clear path forward.
The Electrical Panel Keeps Your Solana Beach Home Running the Way It Should
Solana Beach homeowners invest significantly in their properties. Whether it is a coastal renovation, a high-end kitchen remodel, a solar and battery system, or a full smart home setup, all of those improvements depend on one thing working correctly underneath it all: the electrical panel.
Your electrical panel is the central hub that delivers power to every circuit, outlet, and appliance in your home. When the panel is outdated, undersized, or damaged, the entire system feels it. Appliances do not perform at their best, breakers trip unexpectedly, and the risk of a more serious electrical problem increases over time.
Upgrading your electrical panel in Solana Beach is not a visible improvement. You will not see it from the street or notice it when you walk through the front door. But it is the upgrade that makes every other improvement in your home perform better, last longer, and operate safely for years to come. In a city like Solana Beach where homeowners take great care of their properties, getting the electrical foundation right is one of the best investments you can make.

Finding the Right Panel Size for Your Solana Beach Property
Electrical panels are rated in amps. The right size for your home depends on what you currently have, what you plan to add, and how your property is set up.

Your existing panel is damaged, deteriorating, or unsafe and needs a direct replacement
You are not planning to add any new electrical loads to your home at this time

2. 200 AMP Electrical Panel Upgrade or Replacement
You want capacity for future improvements without having to upgrade the panel again soon
You are planning to add one EV charger along with one or two new appliances
You are installing a solar system and want the panel to support a battery storage system in the future
3. 400 AMP Electrical Panel Upgrade or Replacement

You need to support two or more EV chargers at the same time

What a Panel Upgrade Costs in Solana Beach, CA
The total cost of a panel upgrade in Solana Beach depends on the type of electrical service your home receives, the size of the panel you are upgrading to, and the requirements that come from SDG&E and the City of Solana Beach permit process.
Here are the typical price ranges for Solana Beach homeowners:
Overhead Service (Power lines above your house connect to your electrical panel) $3,500 to $5,500
Underground Service (Your electrical panel is fed underground with no overhead power lines) $7,000 to $20,000
Underground upgrades cost more because they involve excavation, conduit installation, multiple inspection stages, and direct coordination with SDG&E's underground crew. The range is wide because every Solana Beach property is different in terms of trench length, site access, and what SDG&E specifies based on their planner's visit.

Step by Step: How a Panel Upgrade Works in Solana Beach, CA
Here is a clear breakdown of every step in the process from the first phone call to the day your new panel passes its final inspection.

Step 1: File a Service Change Request With SDG&E
Every panel upgrade in Solana Beach starts with a service change request submitted to SDG&E, the utility company that serves Solana Beach and all of coastal San Diego County. This must be submitted and processed before any physical work can begin at your property.
Here is how to complete this step:
Visit SDG&E's work order form at sdge.com/apply-service
Fill in the details for your installation
Review everything and submit the form
When you hire Landers Electric, we submit this on your behalf as part of your project. You do not need to contact SDG&E yourself.
Step 2: SDG&E Assigns a Planner and Visits Your Property
After your service change request is submitted, SDG&E assigns a planner to your project. The planner visits your Solana Beach property to evaluate the current service setup and determine what the new installation will require.
After the visit, the planner issues a formal work order that includes:
The required location for the new panel
Conduit size and type specifications
Meter height and clearance requirements
Trench route and depth (underground service only)
This work order guides all the work that follows.
Step 3: Apply for a Permit With the City of Solana Beach
Once the SDG&E work order is in hand, the next step is applying for an electrical permit through the City of Solana Beach. Solana Beach has its own Community Development Department that handles all building and electrical permits within city limits.
A CITY OF SOLANA BEACH PERMIT IS REQUIRED FOR EVERY PANEL UPGRADE.
Any contractor who tells you that a permit is not required is not being straight with you. An unpermitted installation creates insurance exposure, title problems when you sell your home, and safety risks that never get reviewed by a qualified inspector.
Landers Electric handles all City of Solana Beach permit applications as part of every project. 📞 Call Landers Electric today at (760) 690-7517 or Text Us Anytime.
Step 4: Pre-Meet With the SDG&E Trench Inspector (Underground Service Only)
For Solana Beach homes with underground electrical service, a pre-inspection meeting with an SDG&E trench inspector is required before any digging begins. This meeting establishes the exact conduit installation requirements and ensures the work passes inspection the first time.
Before scheduling this meeting, call Dig Alert (811) and have the proposed work area marked with white paint. A Dig Alert ticket number is required to book the pre-meet with SDG&E.
Step 5: Excavate the Trench and Run the Conduit (Underground Service Only)
After the pre-meet is done and the trench inspector has confirmed all requirements, excavation begins at your Solana Beach property. About 90 percent of the conduit is installed during this phase. The remaining section that ties into SDG&E's handhole or transformer vault must be completed by a utility contractor and can only happen after the second trench inspection is passed.
Step 6: Second Trench Inspection and Backfill (Underground Service Only)
Once 90 percent of the conduit is in place, the SDG&E trench inspector returns for a second review. After that approval, an SDG&E crew completes the final conduit connection into their equipment.
The trench is then backfilled and any driveway, walkway, or landscaping disturbed during excavation is repaired. A final underground inspection approval is required before the project can move forward.
Step 7: Set the Disconnect and Reconnect Date
From this point forward, all steps apply to both overhead and underground services.
The disconnect and reconnect date is the scheduled day when the old panel is removed and the new one is installed. This date is coordinated with SDG&E's service coordinator. The City of Solana Beach is also notified so their inspector can be scheduled on the same day.
Step 8: SDG&E Disconnects Power at Your Solana Beach Home
On the morning of your panel upgrade, an SDG&E crew arrives at your Solana Beach property to shut off power from the utility side. No panel work can begin until this step is complete and confirmed.
Important: Call Dig Alert (811) approximately three days before the scheduled disconnect date. All underground utilities at your property must be located and marked before work begins. This includes gas, water, telecom, and cable lines.
Step 9: Set Up the Grounding and Bonding System
Before the new panel is installed, the grounding and bonding system must be built out. This is a mandatory requirement under the National Electrical Code and is verified during the city inspection.
The system includes:
Two ground rods driven eight feet into the ground
A cold water pipe bond
A grounding conductor connected back to the new panel
Step 10: Out With the Old Panel, In With the New One
THIS WORK CANNOT BEGIN UNTIL SDG&E HAS CONFIRMED POWER IS FULLY OFF.
With the power disconnected, the old panel is removed and the new panel is installed, wired, and made ready for inspection. For Solana Beach homes with overhead service, a new riser and weatherhead are installed at least 24 inches above the roofline to meet SDG&E utility clearance requirements.
Once the installation is complete, the City of Solana Beach inspector visits the site to verify that everything is in compliance with the National Electrical Code. When the inspection passes, SDG&E restores power to your home.
Step 11: Restore the Exterior Stucco or Siding
Removing the old panel requires cutting through the exterior wall of your Solana Beach home. All patching, waterproofing, and painting must be completed before a final inspection can be scheduled. Landers Electric handles these repairs directly or coordinates with a stucco contractor to make sure the exterior looks right before we close out the job.
Step 12: Pass the Final Inspection With the City of Solana Beach
The final inspection is the last official step in the process. The City of Solana Beach inspector confirms that all exterior repairs are complete and that the installation meets all code requirements from start to finish.
Once that inspection is signed off, your panel upgrade is officially done and your Solana Beach home is ready for whatever comes next.
Landers Electric does not call a job finished until the city approves the final inspection and your power is fully restored. 📞 Call Landers Electric today at (760) 690-7517 or Text Us Anytime.
